Digging deep on Brené Brown’s new LifeClass ECourse – the Gifts of Imperfection

Who is Brene Brown and what gifts does she have to offer us?

Brene Brown is a researcher who collected data for 13 years or so on the nature of shame and fear.

She had a big moment around 2008 where she correlated a lot of data and realized that people who live what she calls a ‘wholehearted’ life do certain things – the data supported it. Her ‘moment’ was realizing that she wasn’t doing the majority of things in her life that the data recommended.

The power of vulnerability

She hid the data under her bed for a year or so and went on a personal Journey…came out of it and one thing led to another.  She gave a TEDx talk on the nature of shame, fear, and imperfection which went viral (over 1m viewers).

Fear and Shame have great power over us

Over time Brené has started teaching people what she’s learned about the power of shame and fear and offers very practical tools for shifting into a wholehearted focus.

I found myself watching her two Lifeclasses on Oprah again, and again…and then I found out that she’s doing an ECourse!

This is my first week – how to be imperfect and be enough (note picture!)

I started the course on an instinct…there is a ‘something’ there, really big, which I need to clear.  I am digging down now with the work and realize that I will be happier when this is done.

I’m clearing a generational pattern and I’m clearing it using this course and my work in the Akashic Records.

The course is combination of online videos and journaling exercises.

It’s also recommended that you read her book – The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are.

Since Brené has teamed up with Oprah Winfrey’s Network (OWN), we are also benefiting from some ground-breaking (and Emmy award-winning) ‘Social Lab’ approaches to the work.  We can share our Permission Slips for example on Twitter, Facebook and on shared boards on the website.

Here’s mine!  Permission Granted!

gifts of imperfection

One very effective tool given in the first week is to write yourself  ‘permission slips’ for those things you would like to act on and enjoy, without feeling self-judgement or shame.

Very clever little energetic tool.

I also spent the first day wandering around with this affirmation written on my hand with a black marker

I am imperfect, and I am enough.

It was enough to notice it out of my peripheral vision when working around the house, to remind me that I really am.  Enough, that is.

And I spent all those years telling my girls not to write on their hands….!

I am also in the brene course. I have nagged my kids the same way for years — “don’t write on your hands.” When I wrote on my hands, I had my 16 yo daughter take the pic for me. We were laughing through the process, then she immediately texted the pic to her 13 yo sister saying “look, Mom wrote on her hands”.

I am imperfect and I am enough. Just saying 😉 As a perfectionist who always falls short (obviously) I’ve been accepting this truth and it really helps.
    Thanks for sharing Sarah.
    Lots of love
