Do You Take Dietary Supplements?| Do you value your health freedom? | FDA attempt to ‘reclassify’ them as New Dietary Ingredients

Do you take dietary supplements – do they help you?

dietary supplementsDo you take dietary supplements – anything from multi-vitamins to fish oils?

Do they help you?

Do you know anyone who has been poisoned by them?

Well, the FDA thinks you could be at risk for poisoning, and after 17 years where a previous ruling protected consumers interest, a loophoole has been found and a new draft guidance for industry has been issued.

Would you like to have your dietary supplements removed from the market because the companies producing them can’t meet these new and exessive guidelines?  Then you need to act – and it’s easy!

In a nutshell, the FDA’s new draft guidance on New Dietary Ingredients (NDIs) may remove some of your most used supplements from the market because the new guidance will

  • force many companies out of business because they will be unable to conduct expensive safety studies
  • apply the same control methods for food additives, that are currently applied to  synthetic substances, which are not the same thing at all
  • favor corporates who want dietary supplements off the market.

As Dr Mercola says

The FDA guidelines have modeled the outrageous safety thresholds after those in place for food additives. This appears to be in direct violation of DSHEA, the law enacted in 1994 to protect consumer access to dietary supplements, which classifies dietary supplements as foods, not food additives.

Why spend our tax dollars on regulating dietary supplements so heavily, when it’s pharmaceutical drugs that are harming so many?

Dr Mercola quotes figures that indicate on average 300 people die per day as a result of prescription-related, drug-related deaths, yet NO DEATHS can be found or recorded from someone taking a supplement.

Melody Petersen, author of Our Daily Meds: How the Pharmaceutical Companies Transformed Themselves into Slick Marketing Machines and Hooked the Nation on Prescription Drugs an in-depth look at the pharmaceutical companies reports the figure at 270 per day on average, or 100,000 people per year.

In an interview with alternet.org Melody says

The study estimating that 100,000 Americans die each year from their prescriptions looked only at deaths from known side effects. That is, those deaths didn’t happen because the doctor made a mistake and prescribed the wrong drug, or the pharmacist made a mistake in filling the prescription, or the patient accidentally took too much.

Unfortunately, thousands of patients die from such mistakes too, but this study looked only at deaths where our present medical system wouldn’t fault anyone. Tens of thousands of people are dying every year from drugs they took just as the doctor directed. This shows you how dangerous medications are.

“Removing dietary supplements from the market requires an ignorant public for its’ success”

If you want the current legislation to stay the same, then you need to sign the letter and send it in.  It makes common sense that dietary supplements are natural ingredients and therefore inherently safer than drugs and chemical food ingredients.

Do we really need legislation for that?
