Oh No! Not more GMOs! Do you realize that alfalfa is next? | Time to stop being food-illiterate

Why members of the public are rallying over GMOs and labeling of our foods

GMOs stand for Genetically Modified Organisms, and you are probably eating them somewhere in your diet.  Did you know that?  Probably not, because they’re not labeled.

Just this weekend all over the USA, GMO rallies were organized to spread awareness of about how genetically modified foods can adversely affect our planet and our food supplies.

Rallies were organized in many US States and directly outside the White House in Washington DC.  The demands are simple:-

  • We have the right to know and want Genetically Modified food labeled (aka GMOs).
  • We want factory farmed animal and Genetically Modified animal products labeled.
  • We want independent, transparent, long-term studies done on the safety of GMOs for animals, plants and humans.
  • We want the organic industry protected from cross contamination and lawsuits to organic farmers from GMO technology.

Who: A grassroots effort by consumers around the nation to demand labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)

I find it amazing that anyone thinks they can legislate against seed stock in the first place, GMO or otherwise.  Does the wind and weather legislate?  Does the planet legislate when new seed stock is evolving?

When things go out of balance in nature because of human intervention and new viruses or fungii grow because of our meddling (see below) is legislating against that going to change anything?  I think not.

What we can do is vote against further widespread use of GMOs until we’re sure of the outcome.

Why no to GMOs: Despite a growing number of studies showing harm to health and the environment the FDA has declared GM foods “substantially equivalent” – no labeling required.  There is no regulation requiring GMO labeling on non-organic items

Without a change in the legislation, Monsanto and other GM companies will be permitted to sell their products to food suppliers and have those foods included in our food chain without labeling the contents.  I don’t know about you, but I want to know about a GMO in the food that I may be buying.

Why be concerned about GMOs?  Three good reasons

Despite reassurances from the FDA and government bodies, I think anyone who scratches the surface of the GMO issue has a right to be concerned.

There are at least three levels of concern about GMOs even at first look.

The first one is that it may be unwise to allow companies like Monsanto, an enormously powerful agricultural and biotechnology corporation, to start producing more products which go into our food unlabeled.

Monsanto alone has produced nearly 90% of all GMO seeds now on the market and in US fields.

Many of the company’s past and present executives hold positions in the USDA, Congress, and the Supreme Court.  (This from www.Seriouseats.com  – click here for the full article).

The second one is that no-one is really sure of the long term impact of GMOs on our food chain, or in fact, the planet.

What we do know already about Monsanto’s ready roundup soy bean crop is that in some cases the ready roundup formula has stopped working, and that Monsanto is now in the position of paying farmers to spray it’s rival’s herbicides to save it own crops!

Noticed this article a few months ago from Grist.com (click the link for full article).

Also noticed some recent research where feeding livestock with Monsanto’s soy beans containing ready roundup has caused ‘spontaneous abortion’ and ‘even death’ because of the occurrence of  “a new, self-replicating, micro-fungal virus-sized organism which may be causing spontaneous abortions in livestock, sudden death syndrome in Monsanto’s Roundup Ready soy, and wilt in Monsanto’s RR corn”.

Here’s an excerpt about GMOs from that article:-

“Dr. Don M. Huber, who coordinates the Emergent Diseases and Pathogens committee of the American Phytopathological Society, as part of the USDA National Plant Disease Recovery System, warned Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack that this pathogen threatens the US food and feed supply and can lead to the collapse of the US corn and soy export markets.

Likewise, deregulation of GE alfalfa “could be a calamity,” he noted in his letter…On January 27, Vilsack gave blanket approval to all genetically modified alfalfa. Following orders from President Obama, he also removed buffer zone requirements.

This is seen as a deliberate move to contaminate natural crops and destroy the organic meat and dairy industry which relies on GM-free alfalfa. Such genetic contamination will give the biotech industry complete control over the nation’s fourth largest crop. It will also ease the transition to using GE-alfalfa as a biofuel.”

If this doesn’t sound good to you, what can you do about GMOs?

Here’s a great video to get started with from Millions Against Monsanto – it fills in a lot of knowledge gaps about GMOs.  It would be hard to ban GMOs at this stage, but in the European Union a requirement for labeling has shrunk the market very significantly.

You can get further informed about GMOs with this Facebook Page for Millions Against Monsanto , or head to www.organicconsumers.org  .  Use this link to sign a petition for the Organic Consumer’s Association’s Truth-in-Labeling Petition.

Or head to Justlabelit.org to demand better labeling on our food supply.  We are at the top of the food chain here being the consumer.  As they say in this video, it’s time to stop being food illiterate, learn about GMOs, and I believe it’s time to say no to GMOs.
